Essential Things to do When Moving to a New Home

Moving to a new house should be one of the most exciting times of a person’s life – it is also considered to be one of the most stressful, along with weddings and giving birth! However, once a moving date has been put in place and contracts exchanged there are a few essential tasks to complete which should make the move to your new home a little easier.

• Arrange the removals service. Contact Fox Moving & Storage for a competitive quote and information on the removals options available to you.

• Contact your telephone and Internet provider to arrange a date of disconnection for your current home and a date of reconnection at your new property.

• Contact your energy and water suppliers to notify them of your moving date, and to advise them of your new address. Likewise this should also be done for any other businesses that you might need to inform – such as banks, loan companies and credit card providers.

• Have children and moving outside the catchment area? Notify their current school of your intention to move, and advise what will be your child’s final day of attendance. Contact a new school to register your child.

• Use Royal Mail’s redirection service. This is a simple service to set up by going online at the Royal Mail website. Redirections can be arranged for 1, 3, 6 or 12 months.

• Remember to defrost your fridge and freezer in advance of moving day.

• If you have small children then arrange for suitable childcare for moving day.

• Moving can cause considerable stress to pets. If possible arrange for a friend or relative to care for them for a day or two while you move. If this is not possible then ensure that you have the correct type of pet carrier for transportation to your new home. If you have a pet that suffers badly in stressful situations speak to your vet about what options are available to help reduce their stress levels.

• On the day of the move make a note of your final meter readings for Gas, Water and Electricity. Once at your new home make notes of your first meter readings.

If you follow these simple tips in the run up to moving day your home move will, hopefully, be slightly less stressful. For further information on how Fox Moving & Storage can help you move home contact our team of removals advisors today.
